Who We Are
A group quilt project by KTRSG members on the legacy of residential schools.
We are a group of First Peoples and Settlers who meet monthly. Our members include indigenous people living in the Kawarthas area, people of local faith groups, and of no religious affiliation. So far, all the Settlers in our group are white people. We learn together. Settler members have learned the brutal truths of Canadian history including the Treaty process, the Indian Residential School system and its destructive legacy to individuals, families, communities, languages, cultures, and spiritual ways of living and relating to all of Creation. Recognizing that the relationship between the government of Canada, its citizens and the First Peoples has been defined by colonialism, racism, and inequality, Settler members strive to identify those patterns within ourselves and to work to change them. We are trying our best to become an example of what reconciliation looks like: people working together and treating each other with respect, justice and equality. |
