All are welcome to purchase a ticket to this event, show up, listen, and closely embrace Dr. Lynn Gehl as she talks about the insights she has learned about oppressive power, Canada’s Parliament, and the Department of Justice. Come with a good heart prepared to listen!
Dr.Lynn Gehl has been on a 32-year journey challenging sex discrimination in the Indian Act. Throughout this process Lynn was up against the Department of Justice’s deep pockets of funding pilfered from Indigenous land; yet she has very little access to funding and, for that matte,r community support because oppressed people are especially busy. While Lynn won her court case, Indigenous women and their descendants lost when Lynn was faced with a new form of sex discrimination. The really sad thing about this is this “win yet a loss” occurred during the Liberal government's claim to be a feminist government seeking reconciliation. Of course this was more about lies and manipulation and thus a dismal failure. Recently, on April 17th on Equality Day, Lynn along with her shereos, Yvonne Bedard, Jeannette Corbiere Lavell, Senator Sandra Lovelace Nicolas, Senator Lillian Dyck, and Sharon McIvor, were honoured by Senator Marilou McPhedran on Parliament Hill. The ceremony was a celebration of their endurance despite repeated failures on the part of Canada when it comes to meeting their Charter obligations for Indigenous women and their descendants. Although Lynn gained a “win yet a loss”, the isolation of the 32-year long work has been the hardest. We ask that as a valued member of the Peterborough community that you come, listen, learn, and value that concrete social justice is no walk in the park. We ask that you purchase a ticket to this event, show up, listen, and closely embrace Lynn, to help inoculate her from the unhealthy isolation that patriarchy continues to force her into. Lynn will talk about the insights she has learned about oppressive power, Canada’s Parliament, and the Department of Justice. Most importantly come with a good heart prepared to listen. https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/when-canada-targeted-indigenous-children-their-mothers-lynn-stood-up-tickets-45125601890 When Canada Targeted Indigenous Children & Their Mothers ...
